INDIANAPOLIS -

Nearly 250,000 Hoosiers were unemployed in December 2012.

While Indiana may be slightly lower than the national unemployment average at eight percent, many Hoosiers are still having trouble finding a job.

Indianapolis single mom Sarah Dixon has been out of work since October. She says in between playing with two-year-old Aiden, she spends her day applying for jobs on her smartphone.  Her latest rejection letter was delivered Wednesday afternoon.

"We have reviewed your application. At this time, you have not been selected to come in for an interview," said Sarah Dixon, reading from her IPhone.

With a high school diploma but only a few years in college, Dixon is banking on her experience.

Like many Hoosiers, Dixon is frustrated with applying for jobs online that either quickly get filled, or even worse, the jobs that are never listed.

"I wish employers would tell you if you didn't get it, so you don't waste your time. I also wish I could find more of the jobs that aren't posted and try for that; those 'hidden jobs.' I don't like those," said Dixon.

Joe Frank with Workforce Development says employees may not fully disclose openings by promoting from within or by hiring someone through referral.

That's why Frank says it's important people like Dixon search smarter, because not all jobs will be posted on popular websites like Careerbuilder.

"Employers are looking for folks who are proactive in their job search. Like they stay in touch with people you used to work with. And you should network with others. Also, find out who is the manager in touch wit the job you are looking for," said Frank.

Linked In can be helpful in making those professional networking connections.

Frank also said employers are looking for more technology-based skill-sets.

Workforce Development runs Indiana Career Connect.

The website is run by Work One, and all the jobs are based here in Indiana and are currently open.

The jobs are taken off the website once they are filled, unlike other popular job sites.  There are currently 90,000 Indiana jobs on the website.

The website also shows you where you can sign up online for free training courses across the state.

Dixon, meantime, says she needs a job to bring in money before she can consider finishing up her degree.

"What I've been doing obviously isn't working, so I've gotta find a different approach," she said.

She says she's exhausting all options to find work - including networking.
