Demolition of Hammond bridge to begin on Monday

HAMMOND -

Demolition of a bridge that connects Hammond and East Chicago in northwest Indiana is scheduled to begin on Monday.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says a new bridge on Indianapolis Boulevard is expected to open by the end of the year. The Times of Munster reports Dunnet Bay Construction of Glendale Heights, Ill., has been awarded an $18 million contract to demolish the Nine Span Bridge and build a new one.

The bridge originally was scheduled to be replaced in 2009 but was delayed by the development of a rail yard.
