IPS heads back today

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Thousands of students are headed back to school this morning. But the leftover snow and ice could be a major issue as they head to the bus stop. Quite a few sidewalks and side streets are still covered.

At Kilmer Elementary School 69, some of the walks to the school are clear, while others are still snow covered.  We checked several other IPS buildings overnight.  At many schools, the sidewalks on school property are clear. But across the street and in surrounding neighborhoods, they are snow and ice covered.

IPS has encouraged homeowners to keep their sidewalks clear around schools and where buses pick up children. They really don't want students walking in the streets at any time, especially during the dark morning hours.

City code does require homeowners and businesses to clear sidewalks or face a possible $50 fine.  But as of Friday, only warnings had been issued with no actual fines.

IPS buses will head out at 6:30 a.m. to pick up children for the first day following the winter holiday break.

Several other schools have gone on a two-hour delay this morning due to fog.
