EPA agrees to look into town's radiation concerns

Posted: Updated:

The Environmental Protection Agency says it will look into concerns about radiation levels in a northwestern Indiana community, but some local activists question the approach the federal agency plans to take.

The EPA notified local officials late last month that it would study the levels in The Pines early this year.

The Times in Munster reports a letter from the agency's Matthew Ohl says samples from residential yards are expected to be collected after the potentially responsible parties get permission from property owners and evaluate background samples.

Environmentalist Paul Kysel of the group PINES, or People in Need of Environmental Safety, says the approach is too broad. His group wants the EPA to use the same methodology it used to pinpoint locations with high radiation levels.
