New research shows a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and negative vascular consequences. Dr. Derrick DeSilva explains the implications.

A clinical study involving 206 patients admitted for acute coronary syndromes (ACS) found that there may be a correlation between severe vitamin D deficiency and mortality and that Vitamin D levels may be an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality rates.
In a blog post published yesterday on ArteryHealth.org, Vascular Health Sciences Medical Advisor Dr. Derrick DeSilva stressed the importance of Vitamin D in the bloodstream.
“The next time you have your blood work done insist that your doctor draw a Vitamin D blood test," said DeSilva.
Dr. DeSilva, M.D. is a practicing Internist and Senior Attending Staff at Raritan Bay Medical Center and is on the teaching faculty at JFK Medical Center in New Jersey.
“The reference range for the blood test is 30-100ng/ml. In my opinion and the opinion of many other health care practitioners is that the ideal Vitamin D level should be between 40-60ng/ml.”
