A design for a new Ohio River bridge between Kentucky and Indiana that had been agreed upon in 2006 has been changed.
The Courier-Journal reported Friday that the companies in charge of designing and building the span saved $220 million by coming up with the new style.
The span's design and construction is the responsibility of Indiana. The newspaper reported Indiana officials approved the change.
A group headed by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and then-Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher in December 2006 had chosen a design that had needle-like towers supporting cables that carried the bridge deck. The new design has cables connecting to two bulkier arches above the roadway.
Indiana did not widely publicize the change. Will Wingfield, spokesman for the Indiana Department of Transportation, said the design may undergo more revisions.
