INDIANAPOLIS (IndyIndians.com) - The reigning 2012 International League West Division Champion Indianapolis Indians will return manager Dean Treanor, pitching coach Tom Filer and trainer Bryan Housand to the bench for the 2013 season, while welcoming Major League veteran Mike Pagliarulo as the club's new hitting coach.
Treanor, who is entering his 26th season as a coach/manager in professional baseball, led the Indians to the most wins in all of Minor League Baseball (89) while capturing an IL West Division Title in 2012. Under his stewardship, the Tribe also ranked tied for first in Triple-A baseball with a stellar 48-24 mark at home.
"Dean Treanor's leadership was a big part of our having the best record in Triple-A Baseball last year," Indians Vice President & General Manager Cal Burleson said. "He showed that when you instruct players on the right way to play the game that you can both win at the Triple-A level and develop players for the Major Leagues."
The Tribe's 89-55 record was easily the club's best finish in the Victory Field Era, and was the most wins since the team went 89-53 during the 1988 campaign. Last season, Treanor and the Tribe coaching staff also saw 26 players wear both an Indians and Pirates uniform, with seven making their Major League debut.
Tom Filer returns to Indianapolis for his third consecutive season after leading a dominant Indians pitching staff that paced the IL in ERA, shutouts, innings pitched and WHIP, while surrendering the fewest hits and runs of any staff in the League. Filer also helped guide a starting rotation that featured three of the IL's top six qualified ERAs in LHP Jeff Locke (10-5, 2.48 ERA), RHP Rick VandenHurk (13-5, 2.92 ERA) and LHP Rudy Owens (8-5, 3.14 ERA).
Along with Filer, Tribe trainer Bryan Housand will also be back in Indianapolis for his third year after joining the Indians in 2011.
"Tom Filer did a great job with our young pitching last year, and we led the International League with a team ERA of 3.15," Burleson said. "Bubba Housand does a great job as a Trainer and in implementing our team travel and Mike Pagliarulo comes to us as a highly recommended Hitting Coach."
Hitting Coach Mike Pagliarulo begins his first season with the Indians following an 11-year playing career that included stints with five Major League teams and features a World Series Title with the Minnesota Twins in 1991. Pagliarulo played a key role in Minnesota's playoff run that season, smashing a 10th-inning, pinch-hit home run against Toronto to win Game Three of the American League Championship Series. Following his retirement from baseball in 1996, Pagliarulo has managed the international scouting service, "iScouts, Inc," which provides reports and player evaluations for both MLB and Japanese professional teams.
The defending International League West Division champion Indians open the 2013 season on April 4 when they host the Columbus Clippers at 7:05 p.m. at Victory Field. For 2013 ticket information and pricing visit IndyIndians.com.
