Farley takes long route to BCS title game

Posted: Updated:
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

Matthias Farley was a soccer player before starting to play football as a high school junior, and came to Notre Dame as a wide receiver.

His long, strange trip didn't end there. No longer on offense, Farley is now a starting safety for the top-ranked Fighting Irish.

Farley switched to defense this season and was basically thrust into a starting role after Jamoris Slaughter was lost with an Achilles tear. It wasn't always easy for Farley, but he finished the regular season ninth among Fighting Irish defenders in tackles and was one of six Notre Dame players with an interception.

And now he could be one of the keys to Notre Dame's hopes in the BCS title game against No. 2 Alabama on Monday night.
