House re-elects Boehner speaker

Posted: Updated:

The House has re-elected embattled Republican John Boehner speaker.

The Ohio lawmaker won a second, two-year term as leader with 220 votes, losing just a handful of votes in the Republican-controlled chamber.

The election of the speaker came as the House and Senate ushered in a new Congress Thursday.

The 113th Congress convened at noon on Thursday, the constitutionally mandated time. Pomp and pageantry began simultaneously on either side of the Capitol.

In the Senate, Vice President Joe Biden joined his former colleagues. He was swearing in the newest members as well as those who won another term in November.

Congressman André Carson (D-IN) was named a Senior Whip of the House Democratic Caucus. He will be working with House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) to coordinate and guide the votes of House Democrats on major legislative issues.

For future White House hopefuls, the vote on the "fiscal cliff" compromise could help frame upcoming deliberations over the debt ceiling, reforms to the tax code and how to fund government.

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the Republican Party's 2012 vice presidential nominee, voted for the fiscal cliff compromise this week, while Senate Republicans Marco Rubio of Florida and Rand Paul of Kentucky voted against the measure.

Vice President Joe Biden helped broker the deal with GOP leaders in the Senate, while Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton faced a health scare requiring hospitalization.

And New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie railed against fellow Republicans for not holding a vote on Superstorm Sandy aid, offering a window into how those serving outside Washington might build a case for tackling the capital's gridlock.
