One dead in crash on Shadeland at I-70

INDIANAPOLIS -

One person was killed in an early morning crash on I-70.

Indiana State Police say a 1992 Ford Probe traveling eastbound on I-70 left the roadway, struck a utility pole and crashed on Shadeland Avenue below. Officers say the car was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash.

The victim has been identified as Charles Wayne Barker, 58, of Indianapolis. His family has been notified.

The crash shut down I-70 between I-465 and Emerson Avenue in the early morning hours. All lanes were back open by 10:00 am. By noon, the ramps to I-465 and Shadeland Ave. had reopened.

The impact sheared the utility pole in half and left power cables hanging low enough for a passing semi-trailer to partially drag it down below the bridge.

IPL crews restored the cable to a safe height and replaced the utility pole.

A second multi-car accident was reported on southbound I-465, north of I-70, blocking the right two lanes of southbound I-465.
