Indiana lawmaker seeks 'holistic look' at casino laws

Posted: Updated:
NEW ALBANY -

A lawmaker says it's time to reassess Indiana's gambling policies in light of the state's reliance on casino tax revenue and growing competition from out-of-state casinos.

Republican state Rep. Ed Clere of New Albany says lawmakers must find ways to shore up casino revenues he says Indiana has become "very dependent" upon. Clere said that Indiana needs to re-examine the number of gambling licenses it allows, the locations and the state's tax structure.

He says the state needs to take "a holistic look" at all of its gambling statutes.

Indiana faces increased competition in Ohio, Illinois and Michigan. Expanded gambling has also been considered in Kentucky, although the proposal failed last year in the state's legislature.
