INDIANAPOLIS -

An overnight house fire in the 1600 block of Allegro Way displaced a family of four.  Wayne Township fire investigators believe a faulty exhaust fan on the second floor leading to the attic caused the fire, which burned through the roof of the house.

Husband, wife and two children got out safely, and are now staying with relatives.

Crews found flames on roof when they arrived around 11:30 p.m., then found the closest fire hydrant buried under snow, but quickly dug it out.

Crews had the fire under control within 15 minutes.

One firefighter was slightly injured but was treated at the scene.

The home sustained approximately $50,000 in damage.

Firefighters remind residents to save valuable time by digging out around hydrants to provide winter access, or marking snow-covered hydrants with a broom stick or other locator.

"Some of these fire hydrants are 3-4 feet tall," according to Wayne Township firefighter Craig Peoples. "It takes a lot of work, but when time is crucial,. the fire hydrant is what we need to take care of it."
