Fontella Bass dies

Posted: Updated:
ST. LOUIS -

Fontella Bass had always maintained she co-wrote "Rescue Me," but it took her decades to get credit for it.

She was left off the credits originally and told not to worry about it, but then her name didn't show up in the paperwork either. Bass told Parade magazine in 1995 her life was falling apart when she heard "Rescue Me" used in an American Express commercial without her permission.

That's when she decided to renew her fight, resulting in an undisclosed settlement. Bass died Wednesday of complications from a heart attack three weeks ago.

She had also suffered several strokes in the past seven years. Bass was 72.
