The city of Evansville is getting a nearly $53,000 state grant to convert nine police cars to run on compressed natural gas.
The vehicles also will still be able to run on gasoline.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports the police department debuted a new crime scene investigation van that uses natural gas for fuel in late November.
The Indiana Office of Energy Development is awarding the Community Conservation Challenge grant to the Evansville Police Department and the city's Department of Sustainability, Energy and Environmental Quality.
Police Chief Billy Bolin says the grant will allow the police department to evaluate the use of compressed natural gas "in tough, realistic conditions." Using it as fuels costs less than gasoline.
