Fire ravages west side church two days before Christmas

INDIANAPOLIS -

Parishioners at a local church will have to worship somewhere else after a fire heavily damaged their sanctuary just two days before Christmas.

The fire broke out early Sunday morning before services at Westview Christian Church on 34th Street near High School Road on the west side of Indianapolis.

The fire burned through the floor joists in the altar area, leaving nothing but charred remains.

Firefighters got control of the flames in about 20 minutes, but the sanctuary suffered heavy smoke and water damage.

No one was hurt. Damage is estimated at $300,000.

"Me and my wife we are trying to clean all of this and try and care for the kids," said Eduardo Martinez, Westview Christian Church.

Investigators say the fire was accidental, caused by an electrical problem.

Church members attended morning services at Speedway Baptist Church and will likely worship there until repairs are made.
