WASHINGTON -

The nation's largest gun-rights lobby is calling for armed police officers to be posted in every American school to stop the next killer "waiting in the wings."

The National Rifle Association broke its silence Friday on last week's shooting rampage at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 children and staff dead.

The group's top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said at a Washington news conference that, quote, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

His remarks were interrupted briefly by two protesters who held up large signs that said, "NRA killing our kids."

He also sharply criticized violent video games, violent films and the media for its "moral failings" and enabling a culture of violence, and claimed lawful gun owners were being demonized by the media. He did not specify any particular news network or outlet.

"The truth is that our society is populated by an unknown number of genuine monsters - people so deranged, so evil, so possessed by voices and driven by demons that no sane person can possibly ever comprehend them. They walk among us every day. And does anybody really believe that the next Adam Lanza isn't planning his attack on a school he's already identified at this very moment?" said LaPierre
