INDIANAPOLIS -

Metro Police are investigating the shooting of a woman in the 5600 block of West 38th Street at a Steak & Shake at approximately 4:30 Friday morning. The woman was taken to Wishard Hospital with a gunshot wound to her jaw. Police at the scene said the wound was not life-threatening.

The suspect in the shooting has been identified as a black male with dreadlocks wearing a blue shirt and no coat.

Police say the alleged shooter and victim were in the restaurant with separate groups.  When the two groups began to argue, police were told the suspect and victim engaged in a physical struggle, with the man landing on the floor.

From there, witnesses told police, he pulled a gun and shot the woman in the jaw, then fled.

Police have been interviewing members of both groups.

Correction: An earlier version of this report mis-identified the victim as male, utilizing information provided by police dispatch downtown.  That initial information was changed after detectives interviewed more witnesses at the scene.

Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
