Bank robbery prompts school lockdown in Greenwood

Posted: Updated:
GREENWOOD -

Greenwood schools were on lockdown Thursday morning after a bank robbery at the First Merchants Bank.

It happened around 9:00 am at 18 Providence Drive.

According to police, two suspects entered the bank, used plastic zip ties to tie the hands of employees and one customer, and then ordered them to the floor. The suspects were heard talking on two-way radios to a third suspect who remained outside.

Police say the suspects displayed weapons and were wearing ski masks.

Greenwood schools were placed on lockdown during the investigation. No one was arrested.

The gunmen got away with an undisclosed amount of money from the teller stations and were last observed running west from the bank.

A bank employee and customer were treated at the scene by Greenwood Fire Medics for redness and swelling to their wrists, presumably caused by the plastic zip ties that were used to bind them.

Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the Greenwood Police Department at (317)881-2518 or the anonymous tip line at (317)865-0300.
