Fehr says players waiting for NHL to resume talks

TORONTO -

Union chief Donald Fehr says the players' association is ready to get back to the bargaining table anytime. He is now waiting for the NHL to feel the same way.

There have been no bargaining sessions between the sides since Dec. 6 in New York, when talks broke down. They also met with a U.S. federal mediator for two days in New Jersey last week and reported no progress. Since then there has been only limited contact, including a brief email exchange Wednesday.

The NHL believes that negotiations should resume only when there is something new to say.

Fehr says he likes the idea put forward by Winnipeg Jets defenseman Ron Hainsey that the same parties who met two weeks ago return to the bargaining table, along with himself and Commissioner Gary Bettman. Progress was made during a session that included four new owners and a number of players, including Sidney Crosby.
