Indianapolis Zoo puts baby dolphin on display

INDIANAPOLIS -

Visitors to the Indianapolis Zoo can now see a baby Atlantic bottlenose dolphin that was born there five months ago.

Zoo spokeswoman Carla Knapp says the 100-pound male calf named Orin was kept out of public view until Tuesday so that he would have time to nurse and learn his environment.

Knapp tells The Indianapolis Star that even dolphins born in captivity are fragile during their first several months of life.

Orin was born July 12 and is the ninth dolphin in the zoo's pod, which includes an adult male and three adult females. Orin was born almost a year after a 3-week-old dolphin died at the zoo.
