HAMILTON COUNTY -

Carmel Clay Schools will soon be starting a search for a new superintendent.

Jeff Swensson told the Board of Education Monday he will be stepping down in June.

Appointed superintendent in 2010, Swensson says it is time to "pass the leadership baton."

During his six years with the district, schools saw improvements in education, higher safety standards and growth among staff members.

"The Board is grateful for the positive leadership Jeff has provided this community as the superintendent of Carmel Clay Schools. His unwavering focus on what is best for our students has continued to support this high-performing school district. We wish him the very best in his future endeavors," said Layla Spanenberg, Board of Education President, in a statement.

Swensson also oversaw district efforts to curb hazing and bullying after a community outcry over the investigation into a hazing incident on a Carmel High School basketball team school bus in 2010.
