SHELBYVILLE -

A man who was badly wounded by police officers has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for firing numerous shots in a neighborhood of a central Indiana city.

Shelbyville officers shot 23-year-old Lyman Dawson in January when they say he fired in their direction as they tried to catch him after he had shot at residents who spotted him trying to break into a car.

The Whiteland resident pleaded guilty in August to attempted murder and other charges.

The Shelbyville News reports Dawson said during Monday's sentencing hearing that he had been using the synthetic drug known as bath salts before the shooting.

Defense attorney James Lisher says Dawson has no memory of the confrontation from a head wound he suffered in the shooting.
