INDIANAPOLIS -

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were sent to the 200 block of Bakemeyer Street just before 11 a.m. Sunday after receiving multiple calls to 911 dispatch reporting a green station wagon driving erratically.

The callers advised dispatch that the white male operator of the vehicle had driven through yards before backing into a driveway between two yellow houses.

As the officers were arriving in the area, callers advised the 911 operators that the white male driver exited the vehicle with a handgun and ran into one of the yellow houses.

The involved officer arrived at the scene and observed the white male suspect leaving the house, still armed with the handgun. The officer fired at the suspect, striking him. The suspect was transported to Wishard Hospital and then taken into surgery in critical condition.

Detectives are awaiting positive identification of the suspect. Preliminarily, detectives believe this incident to be a home invasion robbery involving narcotics.

Detectives from the Critical Incident Response Team are heading up the investigation along with a standard independent review conducted by the Professional Standards division. The involved officer will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol for a situation such as this.
