INDIANAPOLIS -

Police have identified a woman found dead in White River State Park.

The Marion County coroner's office says the body is that of 51-year-old Sherese Bingham. The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police are still working to determine if the wound was self-inflicted or caused by someone else.

ISP Sgt. Rich Myers says the body was found on a walking path in the park near the intersection of Limestone and New York streets. Myers says two dogs had to be retrieved by Indianapolis Animal Care & Control because they were protecting the body and "would not let investigative personnel approach."

Police were also investigating an SUV located near where the body was found. They are trying to determine if the vehicle belonged to the victim.
