LAWRENCEBURG -

A Dearborn County Jail inmate faces charges that he ran a tax fraud scheme behind bars.

Dearborn County Prosecutor Aaron Negangard said Tuesday that 46-year-old Robert Bonavita used a fake company and other inmates' personal information to obtain fraudulent tax refunds for them. In return, the other inmates gave Bonavita a portion of the refunds.

Negangard has charged Bonavita with forgery, fraud and conspiracy.

Online records for the jail about 80 miles southeast of Indianapolis show Bonavita has been held there since October 2011 on theft, forgery and check deception charges. The records did not indicate whether he has an attorney.
