Indiana Department of Transportation contractors will shift traffic Wednesday on US 40/West Washington Street into a temporary wintertime configuration. Construction near the intersection of High School Road will resume, and is expected to be complete, in the spring.
Eastbound US 40 will be shifted to new eastbound lanes on the south side of the roadway. Eastbound US 40 will have one left turn lane, one through lane and one combination through/right turn lane at High School Road.
The lane shift under I-465 will be removed from Westbound US 40. Two through lanes will be maintained, with one left turn lane, one through lane and one combination through/right turn lane at High School Road.
High School Road will remain in its current configuration, with both northbound and southbound lanes remaining on the east side of the road. Both directions of High School Road will have a designated left turn lane onto US 40.
Once complete, US 40 will have six eastbound lanes and five westbound lanes at High School Road. Eastbound US 40 will have one left turn lane to northbound High School Road, one right turn lane to southbound High School Road, two lanes for through traffic, and two additional lanes for merging onto northbound and southbound I-465. Westbound US 40 will have three through lanes beginning at the I-465 interchange and two dedicated turn lanes onto High School Road.
INDOT and project contractors hoped to finish the project by the end of the year, but are now preparing the work zone for INDOT snow and ice removal operations for the safety of motorists during winter weather.
