INDIANAPOLIS -

Police say a woman was shot and killed by her son Monday afternoon after an argument over trash.

When officers arrived in the 6500 block of Nolte St., they found 54-year-old Paula Day of Indianapolis unresponsive inside the residence. She was suffering from several gunshot wounds. Investigators say she was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS crews.

Police say several members of the victim's immediate family, including children, were inside the residence at the time of the shooting. Several witnesses told investigators that the victim's son, identified as Eric Bowman, 36 of Indianapolis, was believed to have fired the shots and then fled the scene in a vehicle.

No one else in the home was hurt.  Investigators were told that the argument over trash possibly prompted the shooting.

Several minutes after the shooting, Morgan County police notified IMPD that a possible suspect had turned himself into the Brooklyn Police Department. They also said the suspect was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The suspect was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital in fair condition with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. Homicide investigators went to Morgan County to interview witnesses.

Detectives have preliminarily charged the suspect with murder, but a final charging decision will be made by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.

The suspect remains in Wishard Hospital detention recovering from his injuries.

The Marion County Coroner's Office will determine a cause and manner of death after a scheduled autopsy.
