Potential of higher taxes drawing fire in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS -

Officials in Indianapolis are considering measures that could spike taxes on car rentals and professional sports tickets to raise money to buttress the agency that operates the city's stadiums and convention center.

The City-County Council must act during the first two months of 2013 if it wants to increase the taxes. That timeline was set by a 2009 package the General Assembly passed to help bail out the financially ailing Capital Improvement Board.

The local hospitality industry for years has complained about the tax rates on hotel rooms, rental cars and meals that make Indianapolis one of the highest-taxed U.S. cities for visitors.

The Indianapolis Star reports the idea of more taxes is drawing fire from car rental agencies and the city's NFL franchise.
