A Lawrence police officer has been charged with battery and official misconduct for allegedly using excessive force during an arrest.

Officer Gabriel Slaybaugh has been on administrative leave since the complaint was filed about the arrest, which occurred in August. Police officials say he will remain on leave while the investigation continues.

"This was an isolated incident and should not reflect on the members of the Lawrence Police

Department and their professionalism and dedication they exhibit each and every day," said Lawrence Police Chief Michael L. Walton. "The men and women of this Department do not condone inappropriate conduct, and will continue to Serve & Protect the residents and visitors of the City of Lawrence."

Walton requested the assistance of IMPD's Special Investigations Unit, who conducted an independent investigation and presented the findings to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office. The prosecutor then filed the formal charges against Slaybaugh.

Slaybaugh is a seven-year veteran of the Lawrence Police Department.
