Upland to revive Terre Haute's Champagne Velvet

TERRE HAUTE -

A Bloomington brewer hopes to revive a beer that was one of the more popular brands in Indiana until its demise more than half a century ago.

Bloomington's Upland Brewery has bought the rights to Champagne Velvet, a brew made in Terre Haute until 1958.

The Terre Haute Tribune-Star reports the original, handwritten recipe by Terre Haute Brewing Co. assistant brewmaster Walter Braun was discovered in 1990, and the beer was revived locally from 2000 to 2006. However, Upland says that recipe is incomplete, and it's assembling volunteers to help recreate its taste.

Upland plans to reintroduce Champagne Velvet in Indiana and the Midwest in April.
