SEYMOUR -

Police have arrested the 18-year-old driver of a car that plunged into a southern Indiana river in connection with a passenger's death.

State conservation officers say Tyler Ross of Seymour was arrested on a preliminary charge of reckless homicide Wednesday night, hours after the car crashed into the East Fork White River near Seymour.

Conservation Officer Jim Schreck tells The Tribune that Ross and a 19-year-old man escaped through broken windows, swam to shore and ran to a nearby house to call for help. Crews found 17-year-old Brooke Hawn of Seymour dead inside the car. An autopsy was planned.

Ross was being held at the Jackson County Jail, where records didn't list a defense attorney.

Schreck said Thursday he didn't immediately know why Ross was arrested.
