Plainfield home burns while family is away

PLAINFIELD -

A family was out of state when their home caught fire and burned early Thursday morning.  Crews responded to the two-story house in the 1600 block of Fortner Drive around 3:40 a.m. and found the upper floor burning through the roof.

The fire spread to homes on either side, and those residents evacuated as a precaution while fire crews gained control of the blaze. "There is some damage to them, but it's not extensive," said Plainfield Fire Territory Chief Brian Russell.

There were no injuries, but Russell estimated the house as a total loss.  "This just illustrates the danger we have in neighborhoods like this where you build houses this close, and then you put vinyl siding on them," Russell said.

The cause of the fire is to be determined.

Wayne Township, Danville and Avon crews assisted Plainfield firefighters at the scene.
