Notre Dame's plan to move road wins initial OK

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BEND -

County officials have given initial approval to the University of Notre Dame's proposal to move a busy road that crosses part of campus despite the safety concerns of some residents.

The university's proposal would move Douglas Road north through mostly vacant fields, with the new east-west four-lane road being aligning with an Indiana Toll Road entrance.

The St. Joseph County Council voted 7-0 in favor of the project Tuesday night. The South Bend Tribune reports the council heard from city and tourism officials supporting the plan and about two dozen residents with worries such more traffic near an apartment complex for married students and their families.

The county commissioners could vote next week on final approval for the project, which is being paid for by the university.
