Taliban suicide bombers attack US airbase in Afghanistan

JALALABAD, AFGHANISTAN -

The Taliban claimed responsibility for an attack on a US airbase in eastern Afghanistan Sunday.

Multiple suicide bombers attacked the base and started a gunbattle that lasted at least two hours.

Officials told NBC News two Afghan civilians and three members of Afghanistan's national security force were killed.

The attack began when a vehicle packed with explosives blew up at the air base's gate. Another vehicle driving toward the air base exploded after guards started shooting at it.

No ISAF casualties have been reported, although there were a number of injuries.

An ISAF spokesman said the militants failed to breach the perimeter of the base.

This was the largest attack on the Jalalabad airbase since a suicide car bombing triggered an explosion that killed nine Afghans in February.
