UPLAND -

A couple from Muncie died in a crash in Grant County Friday afternoon.

Police say a Ford F-250 pick-up truck driven by Corey Rumple, 22, of Jonesboro, was traveling west on SR 22 around 5:30 p.m. when he clipped a gray Nissan passenger car that had slowed for traffic ahead at the intersection of SR 5. Rumple's truck then crossed into the eastbound lanes, where it struck a silver Buick driven by 84-year-old Walter Young of Muncie head-on.

Young and his wife Nancy, a passenger in the car, were killed on impact, police said. Rumple was taken to Marion General Hospital for complaints of head, neck and abdominal pain, then was later transported by helicopter to Parkview Hospital in Ft. Wayne.

The occupants of the Nissan, Ronald and Cara Johnson, both 22 of Crown Point, were not injured and refused treatment at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, but say other toxicology tests are pending.

Upland police were aided at the scene by officers from Grant County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police. The Upland Fire Department and Grant County EMA also responded to the crash.
