ELWOOD -

Four juveniles were arrested Friday night in connection with an Elwood fire. Eyewitness News has learned that one of them is the Elwood Mayor's son.

The fire was started Friday night at the abandoned State Plating Factory in Elwood.

Saturday morning, a statement from Mayor Ron Arnold said, "As difficult as this situation is as mayor, it is made more difficult by the fact that my son is one of the juveniles involved. This revelation has been devastating to me and my family."

The four juveniles (17, 14 and two 13-year olds) were questioned, charged with arson and transported to the Madison County Juvenile Center.

Police began receiving information soon after the fire was under control, that four juveniles were seen leaving the facility shortly before the fire broke out.

According to statements taken by Chief Hanna and Assistant Chief Bertram, the juveniles entered the facility through an open gate and door to the building. Early officers were informed by neighbors that kids had been seen entering and leaving the site for the past week.

The juveniles will remain in the Madison County Juvenile Center through the weekend with a court appearance as early Monday.

Chief Hanna has contacted Local, State and Federal Arson investigators to assist in substantiating the cause and origin of the fire. That investigation will take place early next week.

The factory had been vacant since 2008 and no one was hurt in the fire.
