TERRE HAUTE -

A Terre Haute couple accused of locking their adopted children in a room, using duct tape to restrain them in beds and pouring urine on them as punishment have been charged with numerous counts of neglect of a dependent and criminal confinement.

Thirty-nine-year-old Larry Russell and 35-year-old Nikki Russell made initial court appearances Wednesday afternoon in Vigo Superior Court. Each is charged with six counts of neglect of a dependent and five counts of criminal confinement. Nikki Russell also was charged with two counts of battery by body waste and battery resulting in bodily injury.

Innocent pleas were entered for them and Judge Michael Lewis ordered public defenders appointed for them. Each is being held on $100,000 cash bond.

They are accused of abusing four children ages 10 to 17.
