INDIANAPOLIS -

Water company crews now have a special piece of equipment to help them finish the largest sewer project in Indianapolis.

A 20-foot diameter tunnel cutter has arrived at the Deep Tunnel Connector project on South Tibbs.

Since April, crews have dug a 250 feet deep shaft. The tunnel cutter will be used to bore out tunnels at the bottom of the deep shaft.

When complete, the 25-mile underground tunnel system will store 250 million gallons of raw sewage and prevent sewage overflows in rivers and streams.

Machinery needed to operate the tunnel cutter will arrive in 40 truckloads next month.
