Proposal will move up Indiana sales tax collection

INDIANAPOLIS -

Two lawmakers say they plan to sponsor legislation that would require Amazon.com and other online-only retailers with a presence in Indiana to begin collecting sales tax next July 1, six months earlier than a deal worked out by Gov. Mitch Daniels last January.

Democratic State Rep. Ed Delaney of Indianapolis and Republican Rep. Tom Dermody of LaPorte said Monday the legislation would create more equal competition for Indiana's brick-and-mortar retailers in time for the 2013 back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons. Delaney says there's no reason to give a tax preference to one retail segment and not to others.

DeLaney says he believes online companies should already be collecting the 7 percent sales tax.

A telephone message seeking comment was left at Amazon on Monday by The Associated Press.
