Angie's List: Bathroom updates

INDIANAPOLIS -

Do you have a bathroom with pink tiles or a blue bathtub? Little updates like changing the grout color or refinishing your tub can provide major aesthetic improvements for significantly little money.

Indianapolis homeowner Catherine Young likes her bathroom again.

"Now the grout is back to a lovely shade of gray and it's sealed so I don't' have to worry about it. And it was very inexpensive," she said.

After getting zero results from constant cleaning, the homeowner paid to have her bathroom transformed.

"It almost looks like they installed new tile by having their grout refurbished. Cost-wise it's a lot cheaper than it is to tearing it out," said Chris Uhland, Grout Solutions.

The Carmel business owner says the average cost for bathroom work is anywhere between $120 and $350, depending on the size of the shower and the amount of work. Over time, the bathtub shows signs of wear: stains, scratches and dull finishes. For a price, you can replace your tub. But daily work will help keep it looking fresh.

"The best thing is to use neutral cleaners when cleaning your shower. The harsher chemicals like bleach or Scrubbing Bubbles tend to eat at the grout and deteriorate it quicker," said Uhland.

Another simple update: your toilet. It may be more cost-effective to replace the toilet than find and repair leaks, which not only cause damage, but consume water and increase your utility bill. For about $200 you can buy a new one.

"But keep in mind you need to hire a professional to install that so you are going to add a bit of cost when that professional comes in," said Angie Hicks, Angie's List founder.

Remodeling your bathroom can be overwhelming, but it can also be one of the best returns on investment.
