Tornado-damaged Southern Indiana church rededicated

Posted: Updated:
HENRYVILLE -

A southern Indiana church that has served as a base for relief efforts after a deadly tornado last spring has been rededicated following extensive repairs.

Parishioners filled St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Henryville on Sunday as Indianapolis Bishop Christopher Coyne led the rededication Mass. The March 2 tornado damaged the 85-year-old church's roof and steeple.

Pastor Steve Schaftlein tells WHAS-TV that the Mass was a chance to celebrate the $250,000 in repairs to the church.

Volunteer Tom Boehm helped repaint the church's interior. He tells WAVE-TV they wanted the church look the same as before the storm since the town has changed so much.

The town about 20 miles north of Louisville, Ky., was hit by two tornadoes on a day when storms killed 13 people in southern Indiana.
