GREENWOOD -

A ban on feeding stray cats and dogs is being considered in an Indianapolis suburb as a way of discouraging coyotes from roaming around neighborhoods.

The Greenwood City Council has given preliminary approval to an ordinance that would prohibit feeding most wild animals, but not ducks, geese, birds, squirrels or chipmunks. The Daily Journal reports those violating the ban could face fines of $50 to $250.

Greenwood police say numerous residents have reported pet dogs vanishing from fenced yards and others being mauled by coyotes.

Councilman Thom Hord voted against the feeding ban, saying he didn't believe it could be enforced and that residents should have common sense to not leave food outside for animals.

The council is to consider final approval of the ordinance in December.
