A nurse midwife received a one-year suspension after closing down her Indianapolis business and failing to protect patients' files.
Attorney General Greg Zoeller's office filed the license suspension against Barbara Ann Bechtel, a licensed advanced practice nurse. The Indiana State Board of Nursing voted unanimously to suspend her license and require continued education regarding security and record keeping.
The building owner where Bechtel's practice was located asked her to claim the documents at 2110 W. 38th St., but he received no response. In May 2011, the Attorney General's Office took possession of the files and began returning records to patients.
Former patients of Bechtel can still claim their records by submitting an Abandoned Records Request form to the Attorney General's Office. Click here to download the form.
According to state law, the Attorney General's Office has the responsibility to obtain and secure abandoned health records or other records with personal identifying information to protect those named in the files from becoming victims of identity theft. Health and licensed professionals who leave such records unsecured in violation of state law can face fines or other legal ramifications.
