A 14-year-old student at Fishers Junior High School was arrested after police say he took a gun to school Monday.
According to Fishers Police, the student showed off the gun before getting on the school bus at the end of the school day. One of the students went home and told his father what happened and the father contacted police.
Police located the teenager who allegedly displayed the gun, along with the student's mother. They also found other witnesses to the incident.
Investigators believe the student took the gun to school to show off and did not intend to harm anyone. Although they believe the gun was never loaded, the investigation found that the student did have ammunition.
The student was arrested and taken to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center. The teen faces two charges: possession of a firearm on school property (class D felony) and dangerous possession of a firearm (class A misdemeanor).
"We have 20-thousand kids that go to school every day. We can't go through every backpack. We need to rely on parents to be vigilant as well. So, I don't have a good answer for that," said school administrator Mike Beresford.
School administrators told Eyewitness News it's been at least 20 years since they can recall a student bringing a gun to a school in the district.
