Gas leak closes Lantern Road in Fishers

FISHERS -

A gas leak forced the closure of Lantern Road from 116th Street to just south of Fishers Elementary School while Vectren crews made repairs.

The gas leak, which was reported around 12:15 am, has now been capped. By noon, crews were making repairs to the gas line, then will start the process of burying it again.

The leak is small, in a 3-inch main, and not a hazard to the school or homes in the area. Lantern Road is still shut down while they do their work.

Fishers Fire spokesman Ron Lipps told Eyewitness News that a passing motorist reported the smell around 12:15 a.m.  Fishers Fire worked with Vectren to find an underground leak.

"So far, gas detectors have not been able to pick up readings in the general area," Lipps said, "and no evacuations have been made."

Fishers Elementary remained open Monday morning, as the leak presented no threat to children. Lantern Road remained closed to southbound traffic coming off 116th Street while the digging continues.

No traffic was allowed between South Street and Fishers Elementary.
