Rising number of ATV crashes sparks training call

Posted: Updated:
ELLETTSVILLE -

A deadly ATV crash in Monroe County is sparking renewed calls for training in use of the popular vehicles.

The Herald-Times reports 25-year-old Daniel Cutshaw of Spencer became the 14th person in Indiana this year to die in an ATV crash last weekend. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says another 232 crashes have caused 263 injuries this year.

The numbers are up from last year as the vehicles become more common on farms and among recreational users.

Conservation officer Sgt. Jeff Barker says he'd like to see all ATV operators take training classes. The DNR's outdoor recreation division will soon begin offering an ATV safety program.

Barker says the vehicles weigh up to 1,000 pounds, so it's important for operators to know what they're doing.
