SOUTH BEND -

Members of a northern Indiana election board are apologizing to voters who were inconvenienced or unable to vote on Election Day because some precincts ran out of ballots.

The South Bend Tribune reports that the St. Joseph County Election Board has apologized and is taking the blame for the problem, saying it was caused by higher-than-expected turnout, problems processing absentee ballots, voter confusion caused by redistricting and printing costs.

Board members say at least four precincts ran out of ballots, and dozens more ran low.

Board members say they hope to switch to centralized vote centers instead of traditional neighborhood polling precincts by 2014, which would help avoid the problem. The Board of Commissioners has to decide whether to approve the vote centers.
