Central Indiana official quits over letter to GOP leaders

ANDERSON -

A central Indiana officeholder has resigned in a deal to avoid prosecution for using her office for political activity.

Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings tells WIBC-FM that County Recorder Angela Shelton's resignation this week came under a deal approved by the commissioners of the county northeast of Indianapolis.

Hundreds of emails to Republican officials with a letter signed by Shelton and praising Republicans for balancing the county's budget jammed the county's email system for six hours last month. They were traced to the computer of Shelton's chief deputy, Thomas Morgan. The letter might have violated a ban on using county-owned property for political activity. Morgan also resigned.

Shelton's attorney, Bryan Cook, says she didn't commit a crime but was stepping aside for health reasons and the well-being of her family.
