200 Vigo County students lacking shots out of school

TERRE HAUTE -

A western Indiana school district says more than 200 students can't attend school because they haven't been properly immunized for the chickenpox.

Vigo County schools officials say about 70 of those students were sent home Tuesday after showing up for school. The county health department has declared a chickenpox outbreak and reports about 70 cases of the infectious disease.

School district administrator Ray Azar tells the Tribune-Star that the about 220 children excluded from school was much lower than he expected. The Terre Haute district had estimated about 1,300 students and employees needed additional immunizations or better documentation.

Chickenpox vaccination clinics are set at two elementary schools in nearby Parke County after at least eight cases have been confirmed there.
