1,000 Fort Wayne children get new shoes, socks

Posted: Updated:
FORT WAYNE -

About 1,000 students in Fort Wayne have been outfitted with new shoes, socks and school supplies by a nonprofit group.

Each of the Fort Wayne Community Schools students had his or her feet washed by a volunteer during the event led by Samaritan's Feet. The News-Sentinel reports that washing recipients' feet is a central part of the approach used by the group in distributing shoes and making children and their families feel "loved, valued and encouraged."

The Office Depot Foundation donated school supplies and a sackpack for each child. Student volunteers from two Fort Wayne high schools, as well as Ivy Tech Community College, helped with Friday's event.
